Cycling in Years 4, 5 and 6 is an important part of our KS2 curriculum, helping pupils develop confidence, independence and road safety awareness. Children are taught safe cycling skills through practical sessions, with opportunities to cycle to and from school and apply their learning in real-life situations. In Year 6, pupils plan and practise cycling routes in preparation for their transition to secondary school, building confidence in navigating their local area safely and responsibly.
Our KS2 cycling offer is further strengthened through inclusive and community-focused initiatives that ensure all pupils can take part. Bike buses provide marshalled group rides to and from school, promoting safety, teamwork and active travel while building confidence on the roads. After-school rideouts offer relaxed leisure cycling opportunities, helping pupils develop stamina, enjoyment and positive attitudes towards physical activity. In addition, our bike loan library removes barriers to participation by lending refurbished bikes to pupils who do not have access to one, ensuring equity and inclusion. Together, these elements support wellbeing, independence and road safety, while fostering a strong sense of community and encouraging lifelong healthy habits.
